As machinery began to make it easier and cheaper to produce standard lumber, and carpeting became more common, more and more homes began to be made with carpeted staircases, making the decorative hardwood staircase almost obsolete.
However as home restoration and redesign has picked up as a hobby and a way to make a living, there has been a return to the love of hardwood flooring and staircases. Many a home designer has pulled back old worn out carpet to find beautiful wood floors. These discoveries have begun a trend to have the decorative hardwood staircases restored instead of again being covered with carpet.
Lastly, one fun thing about having a staircase is that they look good and especially festive when you decorate them for occasions like the Holidays. With delicate taste and powerful restraint, you may even be able to turn it into a non-tacky Christmas Tree-like holiday décor.
Adding a hardwood staircase may be slightly more expensive than a carpeted staircase, but the value it adds to a home is almost priceless. If redesigning an existing home, do not hesitate to consider an upgrade for the stairs, if new construction then there really is no other choice than a well made decorative staircase.
The danger of this, though, is that some furniture may provide hindrances or obstacles when getting to the spiral staircase. To avoid this, you must place the furniture away from the foot of the staircase. And group the furniture, basically the chairs and perhaps coffee table, like you would normally do.
Even the higher end homes began to be made with these carpeted staircases and the need for the craftsmen became less and less. Cost began to win out over craftsmanship, and the savings was passed on to the homeowner.
