As machinery began to make it easier and cheaper to produce standard lumber, and carpeting became more common, more and more homes began to be made with carpeted staircases, making the decorative hardwood staircase almost obsolete.
While traditional staircases are usually located in areas where one side of it is on a wall and its pretty easy to hang art or framed pictures on that wall, staircases arent always configured that way. Spiral staircases usually hang from the ceiling, sometimes even at the center of the room.
The aesthetic of a staircase made of hardwood also cannot be replaced. Nothing finishes off a beautiful home like a beautiful staircase. The feel of the hardwood under bare feet is priceless. This means that not only is a hardwood staircase the perfect eye-catching addition to a home, but these staircases even improve the feel of the home.
There have always been those craftsmen that could create a beautiful hardwood staircase. Many of the most famous homes in the world were designed around these artistic staircases. The ability to turn simple wood into something simply spectacular is an ability that began to die out for a short period of history.
Even the higher end homes began to be made with these carpeted staircases and the need for the craftsmen became less and less. Cost began to win out over craftsmanship, and the savings was passed on to the homeowner.
The other benefit that will almost always outweigh the cost is the durability of the wooden staircases. These staircases will last as long as the home, usually with limited maintenance. As with most things the quality and durability will usually make the extra cost nominal.
